The guide for a politically correct choice of the menu by the vegan and the restaurant owner.
The vast majority of Italian restaurants has included in their menu dishes within the reach of even the most refined vegans palates!
A passing fashion or a concept destined to last in time?!
Well.. we can’t certainly predict it! But we can still try to understand how difficult it is, at times, choose or simply acknowledge a really VEG dish trough the infinity of culinary proposals that the Italian restaurants have to offer.
To do that we decided, this time, to put ourselves in a vegan to the restaurant, struggling with vegan friendly dishes.
How to recognize a real veg dish?
Here is some helpful advices on how to deal with the vegan diet and what to eat in the restaurant.
When we find ourselves having to eat outside the home could happen to arrive in a place where we will have to make do, alas, of what it offers the menu of the moment.
In these so-called “emergency cases” we learn to orient ourselves in the menu to see if we can still find something suitable for us, perhaps asking a few tweaks (hihihi).
As a starter (appetizers), for example, you could order a mixed seasonal salad, accompanied by the typical bruschetta with extra virgin olive oil and tomato. Simple but tasty!
For the main courses, however, the winning choice is almost always that of the pasta! The toppings are plentiful, ranging from vegetables and legumes. Be careful, though, to fresh pasta, especially the noodles (tagliatelle) and the dumplings(gnocchi), because they may contain eggs.
Inform yourself well on the preparation of soups and risottos, sometimes seems obvious choices .. but often the broth is made with meat.
As a second course the vegan choice is often on the mixed vegetable dish, specifying to exclude dairy products like butter and seasoning and during cooking. Even lacto-ovo-vegetarians and vegetarians will adjust to the waiters always asking you to specify the ingredients of the dishes on the menu and inquiring about any alternatives.
Some options to enrich a second plate are legumes, mushrooms, olives and pickles. Also inquire about the ingredients of casseroles and pies on the menu and other preparations that you could order as a second.
Pizza is one of the most important Italian cuisine and is absolutely the recipe that lends itself to meet, without any problem, to a vegan user.
As for the desserts, attention especially to the cheesecake, puddings and jellies on tarts, which may contain fish glue. Will have to take account of milk, eggs and dairy products. In the case of desserts, one of the easiest choices for vegans is to order a classic fruit salad and find out about the ice cream ingredients that accompany it. Often tastes of fruit ice cream are vegan.
Who wants to order wine or beer, can ask the availability of veg drinks or ask directly to specific brands suitable for vegetarians or vegans.
If it is not an “emergency case” but an occasion of a lunch or a dinner to plan ahead, is a different matter.. we certainly can try to act in advance! If we can, we choose a trusted restaurant which can cater seamlessly to our demands and choices.
In these cases it is highly advisable to get in contact and in person well in advance with the restaurant at which you will be guests, so you can advance to expose their needs.
It is important to provide guidance on which foods we would like included in our personalized menu.
Do not be afraid to give the chefs suggestions!
The risk otherwise is to find yourself in front of a couple of miserable grilled or boiled vegetable dishes, very little compared to the menu of ten different dishes that will be served to other diners.
If you are lucky, however, you meet the restaurants ready to respond to requests for vegetarians and vegans.
Here’s some pictures of “Gioia” restaurant, which from the beginning adopted a true vegan friendly policy, offering its customers a wide choice of refined dishes, very rich in taste!
